A huge thank you to David Massey at the Easterly Road practice for his compassion and patience. The loss of a dear pet who also happens to be a dear friend is particularly difficult to comprehend. Arthur (my beloved and funny gerbil) was treated with real professionalism and sensitivity. Sadly, he had to be out to sleep, but that in my view was the appropriate thing to do in light of his suffering. Thank you for understanding what that means and for your help. James

I took my 4 year old rag doll cat for his annual vaccination as part of the vaccinations for life scheme and was told he needed dental treatment. The estimate was for £325!!! I asked whether he qualified for the dental offer of £99 but was told the treatment was more complex than covered by the offer. I then contacted a different local vet who said the the total cost would be £200. It seems to be that customers are enticed by an offer to have their animal treated and then charged outrageous prices for any treatment they feel the animal needs. I will return for the annual jabs but will not allow my pet or new kitten to be treated. Steve Aldwin
Vet ResponseWe are sorry that Mr Aldwin was not satisfied with his recent visit. We have telephoned him to discuss this further as we always act upon any feedback received. We offer a £99 dental treatment for animals requiring a preventative scale and polish treatment, this is fully comprehensive including a pre-anaesthetic exam and blood sample, the anaesthetic, the dental treatment and post operative checks. We also offer free dental clinics to help prevent any further problems. Dental conditions such as feline resorptive lesions (little holes in cats teeth) and periodontal disease (infected teeth and gums) can be extremely painful as well as causing other hidden problems. Our pets mask this pain better than we do, so it is our duty as vets to recommend appropriate treatment when we find a problem on clinical examination. Dental work involving extractions can be a complex and time consuming procedure, we will always offer gold standard care for the individual pet presented to us, to ensure the anaesthetic is as safe as possible and the work is carried out to the highest standard. We are locally very competitive, gold standard treatment does come at a cost, once we have explained the reasons behind the different costs we find most clients are more than happy to proceed. So long as it is not detrimental to welfare, we always try to find a compromise if cost is an issue, to ensure the best, affordable, treatment for the pet. This is the reason we always supply detailed, transparent estimates before undertaking any work. We always examine the animal before making an estimate to ensure we have the whole picture, if it is difficult to assess the number of extractions required conscious, before the tartar has been removed, then we will always supply the highest estimate and explain that actual costs may be less. We feel that, for the level of care we provide in our state of the art surgery, that our costs are very reasonable. For every pet that is advised treatment their owner is provided with a detailed estimate, given as soon as treatment is recommended, to ensure well informed consent before even booking a procedure in.
